[Link] | I made a pledge. I am going to shoot for one month of as little landfill waste as possible. If I have to buy something in a recyclable container, I aim first for glass, then for metal, and recyclable plastic as a last resort.
Today I bought things in 2 glass bottles and one plastic bag that will all be recycled.

The Doctor's real name is THE big mystery of the series that has been on-going since Doctor Who began in 1963. Over Doctor Who's 45 year history, only two people have claimed to know the Doctor's real name (although the Time Lords obviously must have known) - Lady Peinforte, the vileness in the 7th Doctor story "Silver Nemesis" and River Song.

[Link] | I had the am and early pm off work. I've spent it all so far replacing my stolen bike. My 17 yo bike vanished from my garage Monday :( I went and got a bike that someone abandoned at the U then the U collets them and sells them for $25. So far I've spent 2 hours cleaning and repairing. I have to go buy and install new shifting cables maybe get some handlebar grips and then I think it will be all ready to go. It's a huffy 10 speed touring bike with fenders. I was thrown off by huffy at first but it's pretty light and has good components. Rubber on tires is not in good shape but all the other parts are. Superficial rust on frame and fenders.
One thing I love about bikes is that I completely understand how every part on them works. Not understanding cars kept me from wanting to drive them. I still have only a basic understanding of cars and don't like not knowing how to fix them but I am not into putting all the time and energy into learning that.
My back hurts from working on bike so I won't be able to ride to work today but hopefully soon soon soon.

[Link] | In my dream last night, Paul and august and I were on the run, in hiding. I think we were in hiding from Cher. I don't know why. We had a car but I don't know how we payed for gas. Sometimes we slept out. Once we were out of the car for a second and while at the side of the road, people were throwing money at us because we looked like a homeless family. We were on the run for a year. When I had to make a dentist appointment I had to find a different dentist because Cher went to my dentist and we didn't want to see her.
In another dream, a crazy homeless guy walked into my house through a window. First I just found his rainy footprints but later he came back. Kevin was there to help me keep the guy out but then the guy started grabbing Kevin's nose and hurting him so I called the police.

[Link] | i am trying to figure out my mood a little bit. there's a large dose of "i hate everyone and everything" but somehow it doesn't feel negative. of course there is lots of love really, but hating everything is so much fun when it's somehow in this positive mood. i think it has to do with acceptance. or knowing that it doesn't really matter whether i love everything or hate everything. everything is the same no matter what. maybe i am hating with love. i don't know. i am going to stop analyzing it now because it seems to be working for me.
i am starting to accept the a small possibility of a hope for spring. now i hear it may snow this weekend. my near complete lack of belief in spring this year feels avenged.
A quote from August going off to bed...."I wish I was a robot. I mean a cyborg." Who am I trying to kid with this hate stuff? I love my family to pieces.

[Link] | it feels like the world is ending. it is so consistently bleak and cold this spring. snow and wind and it's pretty much mid-april. paul and I met the same time of year, maybe more like april 18, 20 years ago. 1988. it was warm. no jackets. open windows. no cold wind. things growing. i have an odd collection of little memories of the night we met. seeing marshall sitting on paul's lap. dancing to nusrat. sitting next to paul while his friend asked how old everyone was so he made sure we were both aware of the age difference (me 18: paul 29) as he could tell paul fell for me and he didn't approve. while walking to a convenience store, me showing paul the gigantic pocket watch I had (damn that thing was cool) and paul showing me a brazilian coin he had in his pocket. paul's knees. somehow they had the power to woo me in a major way. talking with paul about music.
i now return to my nearly week long effort to try to get less ill by spending almost all my non-working hours bundled in the bed, watching movies, or reading Beckett prose. Cocooning.
WHERE IS SPRING?????
Bumble bee queens should be out flying and starting nests NOW!!!!
WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[Link] | One thing I didn't realize with having a kid is how continual the blowing of one's mind is. As an infant it is almost constant as they develop so rapidly and turn into these little humans. It slows down a lot but it still happens all the time. August is 6 and the last two nights he has blown me away. Last night as we're going to sleep somehow we got on the topic of division. I gave a brief explanation of the concept and an example. Then he starts asking for problems which he instantly solves (well some with finger help). Then I find out they haven't even done multiplication at school yet. Just addition and subtraction. He is so proud of himself. This morning he asked for more problems at breakfast and was excited to surprise his teacher. Evidently he did 3 pages of division problems at school today. 1st grade. I am so happy we have a montesorri school so he do this stuff now and doesn't have to wait for the whole class. Learning is natural and fun for him.
Then tonight (it's always as we're getting ready for bed that he lays out the deepest stuff) he says something to effect of that he's learning how to be a parent from me and paul and the way we take care of him. As a kid I don't think I had any concept of this. I don't think I really got this idea until I had him. His emotional clarity and understanding of human psychology is what is most astounding to me. Then he says he is sad for his dad's dad who died when paul was 5. August is sad that his grandpa didn't get to be a dad for long enough. But he says he is glad that Lou is around, Paul's step-dad, who is a gem. Then he shifts back into spazzy talk of one kind or another and i am left with my heart in a puddle at my feet.

[Link] | http://2008.sxsw.com/music/showcases/band/69826.html Above link is my sweet Paulie's blurb in the SXSW amalgam of media blitz. See how handsome he is?
He plays in Austin tomorrow and then some other places on the way back up north to our home here. dates here: http://www.paulmetzger.net
I am missing him. But I am much more calm about coordinating things for being a single working mom for 10 days that I was last time he left. Thank goodness for flexible work schedules and handy neighbors who are willing to help. Today was a crazy work day then at dinner August was all over me with climbing on me and in my face stuff and so much spazzy clingy action while I was trying to eat my first and only sit down meal of the day. It was pushing me to the end of my rope and he would only back off slightly when I asked. But I know that he needs more from me when P is gone and I have to work all day Saturday so I let him do his thing for the most part. I am laying off my freelance work this week because I have fewer blocks of time to get anything done and I feel like I need to chill and decompress in what little time I have. So I sit and wish I had a sauna and I come up with plans and try not to take too much action on them because i really need to just rest.

[Link] | Sweet jesus fried monkey beans on a stick! I just listened to one of the nearly 40 78s I pulled out of the most awesome estate sale ever, pretty much. I had only noticed that the band was the Teddy Wilson Orchestra with Buck Clayton, Lester Young, Benny Goodman. Knew it would be good. Freakin' vocal chorus by Billie Holiday, probably my favorite musician if I was ever forced to pick just one! "why was I born" Then I saw that it is autographed by Teddy Wilson on the label. It says "To Dan, a swell sax man, your fellow musician, Teddy Wilson." I picked this out at the sale on the second day after many record hounds had already gleaned through the stacks.
I am taking it as one of several signs that our choice was right and that there will be more happening for me with music. I feel my bee work is more important to the world that just having another person dinking around with music, but so be it. For now at least it seems.
